Our visit to the "big island" of Hawai'i involved a lot of driving. It is indeed a "big" island. We stayed in Waimea (Kamuela), which was quite central, and the setting is lovely and cool up-country. Aside from our several visits to the Volcanoes National Park area, we hosted some friends for a day, driving around the North Shore, and walking around Akaka Falls.
Akaka falls are north of Hilo, and are located in a beautiful setting. The falls are quite pretty, but the real attraction is the lush tropical forest surrounding the hike to and from the falls.
